Abstract
This essay examines the theme of the Maremma’s landscape identity as an expression of an agricultural landscape reshaped by the agricultural transformations of the twentieth century. The Maremma of land reclamation and agrarian reform, caught between conservation and transformation, thus becomes a unique case study for legal reflection on the historical significance of the establishment of agricultural landscape protection. The transition from marshland to garden, from health hazards to the transformative effects brought about by tourism, is in fact, in the Grosseto Maremma, both sudden and, at the same time, the result of a very long period of anticipation.
