Il saggio ricostruisce la gestione dei cavalli da parte del Comune di Torino nel Trecento attraverso gli Ordinati: dai rimborsi per i destrieri dei milites alla crescente presenza delle compagnie di ventura, fino ai problemi logistici legati all’alloggio degli animali in città. Il cavallo diventa così un osservatorio privilegiato sulla società torinese, mostrando come guerra, fiscalità e crisi demografiche plasmino in profondità l’amministrazione urbana della città.

The essay reconstructs the management of horses by the Commune of Turin in the fourteenth century through the Ordinati, from reimbursements for the warhorses of the milites to the growing presence of mercenary companies, and finally to the logistical problems related to housing the animals within the city. The horse thus becomes a privileged lens through which to observe Turin’s society, revealing how warfare, taxation, and demographic crises profoundly shaped the city’s urban administration.
